How to Conserve Energy in Your Home
How to Conserve Energy in Your Home

With the increasingly high cost of electricity it is important to find ways to conserve energy in your home. In some parts of the world, such as in South Africa, the electric grid is so overloaded that there is a risk of blackouts, and load shedding is now a part of life. This emphasizes how important it is to conserve energy.

Solar Power

One very effective way to conserve energy is to use solar power. Of course, this is only feasible in countries which receive enough sunlight. If you are lucky enough to live in such a country, then it is worth considering installing solar panels in your home. Although the initial cost may be high it does save a great deal of money over the long term. You can use solar energy in your home to power your lights, television and even your cell phone. This means that your electricity costs will be lowered and the load on the power grid will be reduced. Everybody benefits when you conserve energy.

Energy Efficient Utilities

A simple way to conserve energy in your home is to use energy efficient light bulbs. This means switching to energy efficient CFL or LED globes, which not only saves power, but also lasts much longer than the older traditional light bulbs. These newer bulbs use up to 25% less energy than the older bulbs.

You can also adjust your thermostat if you have central air conditioning. In fact, for every degree that you set your thermostat above 20 degrees in winter, you add 10% to your heating bill. Thus, it is best to set your thermostat in winter to a maximum of 20 degrees Celsius if possible. You should also keep the house properly sealed and keep windows and doors closed when you are using air conditioning, so you are not wasting energy. You also should ensure that your ceiling is well insulated. You can also adjust the thermostat on the water heater to save on energy. You could change the value to about 50 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit).

Update Appliances

If you need to buy a new appliance, such as a washer or dryer, choose one that is energy efficient. It is also wise to wash your clothes in cold water as much as possible. Do not wash a few clothes at a time but rather have one big load of washing. This will save on energy use and the amount of water you are using.

In terms of cooking, it is more energy efficient to use a microwave than to use an oven. Of course, sometimes you do have to use an oven depending on what you are making. If you need to warm up food, then a microwave is a more energy efficient choice than an oven. If you do have a dishwasher then only use it when it is full of dirty dishes and try to use only on the economy cycle. If you follow these simple tips you should be able to save energy and reduce your electric bill.
